pitmeddenariel1Pitmedden Garden and Museum of Farming Life has opened its doors to visitors for 2015.

Susan Burgess, property manager and head gardener, said everyone had been working hard to get the popular attraction into shape.

She explained: “We are particularly excited to unveil our new orchard which visitors can access from the walled garden.

“The orchard has been in the planning stage for several years but last autumn the gardeners set about planting more than 200 trees and fruit bushes in a one acre former grazing paddock.

“It’s not every day you get to create an orchard with apples, pears, cherries, currants, rhubarb and even cob nuts and filberts to name but a few.

“More than 20 staff and volunteers have been involved in this project.”

She explained that the orchard will take several years to reach maturity but they were looking forward to being able to harvest and sell the produce which will contribute to the garden’s financial stability.

Jim McColl, from the BBC’s Beechgrove Garden, officially opened the orchard. He has had a long association with Pitmedden and is patron of the newly-formed Friends of Pitmedden Garden group.
