A North-east primary school held their monthly Fairtrade cafe recently with a few special additions.

The Fairtrade Group at Udny Green School hosted their latest event last Friday in conjunction with Fairtrade Fortnight and decided to sell second hand items available to buy for the first time.

Ten pupils ranging from P1 up to P7 organise the cafe which is held on the first Friday of each month where they bake delicious foods themselves fresh on the morning of each event.

Bethany Webster (P7) and Isabella Jones (P5) also enjoyed learning more about Fairtrade with a game about trading standards.

Bethany said: “We played a trading game set on countries. We had to trade and make as much shapes as we could.

Isabella added: “The shapes represented the clothes- but some people were cheating!”

P1-3 teacher, and group organiser, Miss Gibb, said: “The game represented that trading isn’t fair and that we want to stop that.”

Scrumptious flapjacks made by the pupils as well as Fairtrade teas and coffee and second hand uniforms were all available to the crowds of parents that turned out to the event.

Miss Gibb added: “The parents have been very supportive – and it’s great to see the kids so passionate.

“Learning things like baking are all life skills.”

The school has three rotating groups including the Fairtrade Group, Eco Group and Rights Respecting School Group.
