LOCOS AGREE TO CHANGE FINAL VENUE
Formartine United will face local rivals Inverurie Loco Works at Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh in the final of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup on Saturday 19th October and not Christie Park, Huntly as first announced.
Manager Steve Paterson had thought that he was set to return to the scene of many of his historic triumphs although Christie Park was not Pele’s first choice of venue for hosting the cup final. “We nominated The Haughs, Turriff as our first choice with Princess Royal Park, Banff as second,” Paterson advised.
Martin Johnston, Secretary at Formartine United added, “It came to light in the lead up to the Aberdeenshire FA meeting last week that neither Turriff nor Vale able to host the final due to having both sold out their hospitality for their respective league fixtures scheduled for that day.”
“We totally respect the fact that clubs cannot afford to turn away good custom and therefore when Fraserburgh indicated that they were keen to host the final as they were away from home it seemed a no brainer. We had already provisionally agreed a 2:00pm kick off with Locos to accommodate the fact that they are hosting the Neil McLean Testimonial Dinner at Thainstone that evening so even if the final went to extra time and penalties they could be home by 6pm.”
“I received a call from the Aberdeenshire FA on Sunday morning advising of the situation and that given the circumstances Inverurie had reconsidered the situation and they advised that they were now happy to go to Fraserburgh!”
“We are delighted that this has been resolved and hopefully we have not lost too much time in organising the event.”
Formartine United also acknowledge that the original article posted on this site may have been considered to be disrespectful to Huntly Football Club.
Martin Johnston advised, “Formartine United fully recognise the efforts that Huntly have made in making their facilities available to host the final. Whilst they could not accomodate our own particular corporate requirements on the day, every effort was made by Huntly to do so. The facilities at Christie Park including the playing surface are amongst the best in the league and would make a fitting venue to host any cup final. Formartine United have nothing but respect for Huntly FC and applaud their efforts for trying to accomodate the final at such short notice. We apologise unreservedly for any offence that might have been taken.”
The events of the last few days have undoubtedly strengthened the feeling amongs some of the Aberdeenshire clubs that the cup final venues should be pre-determined at the start of the season when the fixture lists are first issued.
This is an issue that is sure to be raised again in the not too distant future.
Full details of the Cup Final hospitality arrangements will be announced in the next few days.
